Jenday Conure's are known in the parrot world as little Macaws because of their great personalities. In the wild, the Jenday Conure originates in Brazil, but they cover a large area in South and Central America. in the wild. In captivity they make wonderful companions for individual and family environments.
My experience with our Jenday has been pleasant and I would recommend them to anyone that can devote time each day to their bird. They can be loud when they are excited or neglected and could annoy close neighbors and sensitive roommates.
A nice roomy cage of 20" x 20" with lots of toys and at least three food dishes is recommended. They love puzzle toys, natural perches and puzzle toys. Or pet bird eat what we eat whether it is pasta tonight or fruit with cereal, they love what you eat. You may even find yourself eating better. The diet we feed our parrots consists mainly of Kaytee exact rainbow pellets, supplemented with fruit and veggies. Yes a few seeds are alright but they will not make a healthy specimen in massive quantities.
My Jenday will stay on a T-perch for hours with a few treats in his cup and a toy or two. I love to carry him from room to room so he can keep me company. Did I mention how entertained I am with his antics and tricks while I do the chores.
They are capable of learning several words even phrases and will learn tricks easily. They make great pets that socialize with the entire family, not just one member. The Jenday is a close relative of the Sun Conure, but slightly bigger and a little quieter. The Jenday is a very colorful Conure with a yellow head, orange breast with green and blue wings. When in the nest the parents feed the young on their back so they enjoy lying upside down in your hand naturally. We pull our baby’s at one-week-old when their eyes are still closed. When feeding them or just walking by the brooder, I talk to them and pet they’re little bald bodies. By the time they are weaned they are used to touch and contact. They think we are mom and dad and have no fear of people, and love new things that broaden their horizons.
Potty training is started at about ten weeks when they are able to grasp a finger and stay in place. You can find more information on this and other bird topics on the question page. These are not pet shop birds, our birds are well adjusted and eager to be a part of your family.
